The Society for Development of Marginalised Children (SDMC) was established with a deep commitment to advancing the holistic development and well-being of children living in vulnerable circumstances, particularly those residing in orphanages and child welfare institutions. The Society was founded in December 2023 under the visionary leadership of Dr. Subhash Chandra Arya, a distinguished paediatrician whose lifelong service to children laid the foundation for this initiative.
Dr. Arya began his medical career in 1966 at Holy Family Hospital and subsequently joined Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in 1974, where he served with distinction for over three decades. In 2008, he continued his professional journey at B.L.K. Super Speciality Hospital and remain as an Emeritus Consultant. Across more than five decades of clinical practice, Dr. Arya cared for thousands of children from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, gaining profound insight into their physical, emotional, social, and developmental needs.
Throughout his practice, Dr. Arya repeatedly encountered a compelling and deeply concerning pattern among children who were abandoned, institutionalized, or awaiting adoption. While many appeared physically healthy, they often exhibited emotional withdrawal, limited social engagement, reduced eye contact, and subdued affect. These signs reflected unmet developmental and emotional needs, needs that could not be addressed solely through medical treatment.
Notably, when some of these children were later placed in nurturing family environments, their transformation was remarkable. Their emotional responsiveness improved, social confidence increased, and overall development accelerated. These observations reinforced a critical truth: early childhood development extends far beyond nutrition, hygiene, immunization, and clinical care. Emotional warmth, consistent bonding, cognitive stimulation, and responsive caregiving are equally essential for healthy development.
Recognizing that institutional settings, despite providing basic physical care, often lack structured emotional and developmental stimulation, particularly during the most formative early years. Dr. Arya resolved to address this systemic gap. Following his retirement from active hospital practice, he founded SDMC alongside like-minded professionals, child development specialists, and community advocates.
SDMC is committed to ensuring comprehensive child development, with particular emphasis on children from birth to three years of age, while extending support to older children as needed. The Society works to strengthen emotional, cognitive, social, and developmental well-being alongside physical health.
